As the pandemic devastated the entire world altering all our lives in many ways, 2020 left a lot of time for self reflection. Sometimes I wrote down gems I learned along the way and other times the uncomfortable realizations were so stunning that it left me pondering for hours on how to synthesize the words.

Here are some realizations I came to as 2020 wrapped up. These came from conversations, books, podcasts, and TV shows I re-binged (The Office ❤).

  • People’s traumas can explain their behavior but it does not excuse it.
  • We can know why someone did something and still not be okay with what they did.
  • Things that might be obvious to you are not always obvious to others. Consciously practice grace.
  • No one owes you anything. Abandon that entitlement.
  • Your wins aren’t invalidated because you choose not to share them on social media. Try not to force social norms that don’t come naturally to you.
  • Sometimes it might feel like nothing big is happening in your life but remember that it’s the little things you do day in, day out that eventually adds up to the big things you will do and have done.
  • Sometimes it is not tough love, they are just mean.
  • Just because someone does something good for you, it doesn’t mean they are good for you. Be grateful but know when to walk away.
